LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Local nonprofit Potluck Food Rescue announced this week the launch of a new app that continues their mission of rescuing food and fighting hunger in the community.
In a post on social media Thursday, the company said that they launched the Potluck Food Rescue Rapid Food Recovery Team, as well as the Potluck Food Rescue app, which residents can use to donate food.
According to a statement on FoodRescueHero.org, the most recent data released by the USDA in 2023 shows that Arkansas ranks at the top of the list of U.S. states for rates of food insecurity, with 18.9% food insecurity among its residents. In comparison, the nationwide average was 12.2%.
“Arkansas is #1 in food insecurity in the nation. We should be using every tool available to see to it that good quality edible food makes it to those that need it most and does not end up in the landfill,” Sylvia Blain, Chief Executive Director of Potluck Food Rescue said.
Blain said that Potluck Food Rescue will celebrate its 35th anniversary this year and she can’t think of a better way to move the organization into the future.
“Potluck Food Rescue is excited to add our name to the growing list of partners in the Food Rescue Hero network. We have been looking for an app solution for more than seven years,” Blain said. “This technology will expand our impact into areas we struggle to reach with our existing fleet and expand our food recovery access into the “off hours” we have been missing due to a lack of staff.”
The Potluck Food Rescue app can be downloaded on the Apple App Store and Google Play. For more information, visit PotluckFoodRescue.org.
